Seiko Launches Bold Limited Edition Seiko 5 Sports Watches, Entering the Ski Resort Market
The 5KX, certified by the ski resort.
Southeast Asia may be known for its tropical climate rather than snow-capped mountains, but that hasn't stopped Seiko from collaborating with its exclusive retail partner in Singapore, Hong Kong, and other major Asian markets, TSG Group, to launch two winter sports-themed limited edition Seiko 5 Sports watches. Featuring a distinctive purple and brown color scheme, these watches are based on the classic "5KX" series, perfectly blending the series' approachable price and dive watch design with color schemes inspired by winter sports gear.
These watches are produced in limited quantities, reflecting Seiko's consistent intention to use the Seiko 5 Sports series as a platform to showcase a bolder aesthetic. This approach might seem risky at higher price points, but it feels just right here.
Initial Thoughts While some brands have been criticized for releasing too many limited editions, this is precisely where the Seiko 5 Sports series excels. The series itself boasts a ubiquitous dive watch style and an approachable price, making it an ideal platform for iterative design iterations. Collectors spending thousands of dollars often opt for safer colors like black, blue, or white, such as purple, brown (and even pink), offer a more accessible option.
According to Seiko, the purple and brown choices are inspired by winter sports gear; I can imagine purple perfectly complementing Patagonian winter attire.
Both color options are based on the 42.5mm "5KX" dial platform and retain its now-familiar specifications. The crystal is made of slightly domed Hardlex tempered glass—Seiko's exclusive tempered glass—and paired with a bidirectional rotating bezel that matches the dial color.
